October 2024 Anglican Commentary 1: The Rt. Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango, Assistant Bishop of Bondo, Kenya

Sermon on 1 Samuel 3: Delivered at VTS Convocation, October 8, 2024

At any point in our lives and ministry, there are people whom God brings our way for mentorship.
When God brings people in our way, do we allow them to flourish under our care? Or do we kill their dreams and aspirations?
God brought young Samuel under Eli the priest for mentorship.
Samuel served under Eli and assisted him.
Eli integrated Samuel into the system and introduced him.
He slept where the ark of God was kept. Made an insider.
He was completely exposed to all aspects of the work.
Samuel did not know God when he started off – he had no conviction.
His call or ministry was not clarified.
Eli helped Samuel to clarify his call. Samuel even thought that it was Eli who was calling him. Eli had to point him to God. Give him proper direction.
Eli helped Samuel to grow and flourish in the ministry – He had all the time for him.
Samuel goes to Eli twice – he does not complain.
The Message given to Samuel is not just interesting. It is a very hard message. And it is directed to the family of Eli.
Samuel tries to escape the responsibility he is given by God. He tried to stay long in bed and avoid Eli.
Eli does not attempt to help him escape from the hard message.
He encourages him to take responsibility.
Eli accepts the hard message. He facilitates the good that God is doing in Samuel instead of blocking or killing it.
Helps Samuel to rise, giving him the best advice and pointing him to the right direction.
He is not envious of the honour God is giving to Samuel. Even when he knows Samuel may overshadow him and his family.
