This event is brought to you by the department of Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary in collaboration with the Deep Calls to Deep, a program to strengthen and nurture working preachers.
Deep Calls to Deep program at Virginia Theological Seminary invites you to the 2021 Deep Calls to Deep Lecture Series with three sought after and experienced preachers on the topic of “Preaching as Healing Speech”. Following a short worship service in which the distinguished homilist will preach, each speaker will present a lecture following by a question and answer period. Please note that the first lecture is in the evening and the following two are in the afternoon (EST). Select one ticket type for each day.
Monday June 7, 7:00-8:30 pm EST with The Rev. Dr. Carolyn Sharp, Professor of Homiletics, Yale Divinity School. Worship with sermon (Luke 18:31-43), followed by lecture with conversation on “The Treasure of Biblical Allusions: Intertextual Preaching as Healing Speech.”
Tuesday, June 8, 3:00-4:30 pm EST with The Right Rev. Carlye Hughes, Bishop of the Diocese of Newark. Worship and sermon (Luke 19:1-10), followed by lecture with conversation on “Do you want to be healed.”
Wednesday, June 9, 3:00-4:30 pm EST with The Rev. Dr. Martha Simmons. Worship and sermon (Judges 4:4-10 and verses 17-22 – “Every Person Needs a Hammer”), followed by lecture with conversation on “Preaching in the Church of the Future: Developing Your Toolkit.”
