The educational experience at VTS begins with a core curriculum of scripture, theology, and church history and expands to include electives and experiences that unite theory with practice. This integrative approach makes the curriculum with our Masters, Doctoral, or Non-Degree programs come alive as students use their classroom learning in the field.

VTS offers full scholarship packages to all admitted full-time, residential students, beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. The scholarships cover tuition, on-campus housing, and meal plans for students studying in VTS’ Master in Divinity (M.Div.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Diploma in Anglican Studies, Diploma in Theology, and Pathway to Ministry programs.

Worship at Virginia Seminary is first and foremost a communal act of thanksgiving and praise of the God who has created and redeemed humankind through Jesus Christ. It is at the heart of what we do, central to understanding that theological education flows out of worship.

Daily expectations of students and faculty include three elements: commitment to study and participation in class, attendance at one of three daily services (Morning Prayer, Holy Eucharist, or Evening Prayer), and sharing a common meal at lunch in Coffield Refectory.

Student Housing

In preparing its students as servants of Jesus Christ, as lay and ordained leaders of the church, the Seminary has placed theological education in the context of residential community marked by common life and worship.

Traditional Residence Halls

The Seminary has four on-campus residence halls for student housing.  The residence hall rooms are designed to accommodate only one person, and therefore cannot support a student coming to seminary with other family members.  The residence halls also do not accommodate pets and are smoke-free throughout.  Pet exceptions can only be made for those pets designated as official service animals per ADA guidelines.

On Campus Family Apartments

Virginia Theological Seminary has 39 apartment-style housing options for those coming to Seminary with a spouse and/or children. 1-, 2- and 3- bedroom units are available in these four garden-style apartment buildings. Apartments are unfurnished but do include all major kitchen appliances and full-size washers and dryers.

Off Campus Housing

Students may choose to live off-campus in nearby housing. Off-campus students are expected to participate in community life through regular participation in worship, classes, and lunch in the refectory.

Apply to Our Programs

Applications are accepted throughout the academic year with the following deadlines (note that international applications will be considered only in the December 1 round, and Pathway to Ministry applications will be considered only in the February 1 round):

December 1: International applications, and all master’s level application types except Pathway to Ministry (decision notification by January 30);
February 1: All Pathway to Ministry applications, as well as applications for all other tracks (decision notification by March 15);
May 1: All master’s level application types except Pathway to Ministry (decision notification by June 1).

While our master’s level programs may be pursued on a part-time basis, students in the Master in Divinity program must complete the last two years in residence full-time.

We strongly encourage prospective students to apply as soon as they are able, and for those in an ordination process in The Episcopal Church, as soon as they have received diocesan permission to do so. On-campus apartments and residence halls are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
