Lenten Quiet Day

Date: February 22, 2021

A Quiet Day provides an extended period for meditation, devotional reading, contemplation, and simply being attentive to God.  Freedom from speaking allows the senses to be heightened, increasing awareness of the presence and movement of the Holy Spirit in our midst. The community is invited to enter this holy silence from the end of the morning reflection until Evening Prayer, reflecting on the Lenten themes of repentance and renewal.

Classes do not meet on Quiet Day. This allows students, faculty, and families to engage fully in a day of worship, reflection, and prayer. It is expected that most Quiet Day participants will attend Morning and Evening worship. While the Order of Service for Noonday is considered optional, all are encouraged to mark midday with prayer. Participants may choose to wear cassocks on this day.

Our guest speaker is the Rt. Rev. Phoebe Roaf ’08, bishop of West Tennessee. The Rev. Rick Lord ’81, a retired Episcopal priest and noted classical guitarist, will provide a musical meditation. Worship Committee members will serve in liturgical leadership roles. Evening Prayer will include a slideshow of photos collected from the VTS community.

Spiritual direction will be offered remotely throughout the day for those who pre-registered. Our beautiful campus provides ample opportunities for spiritual refreshment. We encourage the use of St. Cyprian’s Labyrinth and the Chapel Garden for prayer and reflection. The Welcome Center Library will offer a display of recommended books. Please note that Immanuel Chapel will be in use as a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Tuesday and will not be available.

Off-campus students are invited to spend the day on campus and have lunch in the refectory. All COVID-19 protocols will be carefully observed, including masks, distancing, and frequent washing/sanitizing of hands. For those unable to travel to campus, all worship and resources are available online, allowing everyone to participate fully.

New this year: a dedicated Quiet Day web page. Here you will find a complete schedule, videos, devotional guides, and a reading list. For friends and alumni, there is a “Create Your Own Quiet Day” corner, making these resources available to the wider Church.

In these uncertain times, may we rest in God’s perfect peace and unceasing changelessness. I pray that you may experience a blessed Quiet Day.
