20th Anniversary

Date: November 6, 2023

One theme of this year is the theme of remembering significant anniversaries. As a Seminary, we have marked our 200th year; and on Wednesday, we remember the 20th anniversary of the African American Episcopal Historical Collection.

Our community Eucharist will focus on this anniversary. So, at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023, we will hear from our guest preacher, the Rev. Charles Fischer ’09, Vice President for Seminary Advancement at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The AAEHC was founded on November 8, 2003. Born from the vision of historians affiliated with the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church (HSEC) in the 1990s, the AAEHC was established to ensure the preservation of the profound experiences and perspectives of African American Episcopalians. Virginia Theological Seminary partnered with the HSEC to provide a home for this archival collection, curated at Bishop Payne Library and staffed within the archives.

It is truly an honor to have this collection in our library. This is an important ministry: we need to remember these important voices from the past so we can live authentically and effectively in the present.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
