A celebration of the library

Date: May 3, 2024

Last night, we had the Thesis and Summative Capstone Projects Presentation Evening. It was a delightful occasion. The largest number of students for many years had either completed a thesis or a capstone project. Rapidly, it became apparent that gratitude was a primary theme. And slowly the climax of the evening was reached as Dr. Sharon Heaney, right at the end, acknowledged the extraordinary service of Dr. Mitzi Budde. A photograph was taken with Mitzi surrounded by these students. It was so appropriate. Here was a group of students who had been ‘heavy’ users of the library surrounding the talented director of that library for over thirty years.

The library remains one of my favorite places on the campus. I love surrounding myself with books. I love the worlds that I discover inside the pages. I love a well run library, which, especially sense the renovation, is gracious, airy, and spacious. I marvel at the hours that each book takes to be written: I covert more hours in a day so I could read more on this or that. I enjoy browsing the range of books written on niche topics.

In Mitzi I recognize a lover of books. This is the gift that she brings every single day to her job. Thank you Mitzi. Last night was a lovely moment as we recognized the debt that any researcher owes to a librarian.
