A commentary for Thanksgiving Week

Date: November 20, 2023

Normally, there is a commentary for every weekday when the Seminary is open. However, this week we are migrating part of the website; so I am writing a commentary for the week.

This is the week of gratitude. Gratitude is a fundamental Christian disposition. Christians look at the world through the lens of gratitude: every day we are granted is a miracle – we see, hear, smile, laugh, and love; and there are countless moments in every day for which we should be grateful – from the bed we sleep in to the shower to the meal to the dreadful TV series that we are binge watching.

I am deeply grateful for serving at Virginia Theological Seminary at this time. The staff are extraordinary – dedicated, hard working; the students are full of potential – ready to serve God and God’s church; and my faculty colleagues are committed to excellence in both research and teaching. It is a joy to be here.

So thank you. And may you all have a blessed week.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
