When someone answers a call to ordained ministry, they rarely walk that path alone. Beside every priest, deacon, or seminarian is a network of family, friends, and loved ones whose lives are quietly (and sometimes not-so-quietly) shaped by that call. For spouses and partners, ministry often unfolds not from the pulpit, but around the dinner table whether that’s a home-cooked meal or Fish and Chips and a Pub Pretzel at 1823 during late-night conversations fueled by reality TV train wrecks, through unexpected moves, the sale of homes once thought to be “forever,” changing congregations, and the steady, faithful work of offering love and support.
The Spouses and Partners Group (SPG) exists to remind us that we are not meant to walk this journey alone. We are a community of spouses and partners who gather to encourage one another, build friendships, share wisdom, and celebrate the joys (and occasionally laugh at the chaos) that come with life in ministry. Though our stories and experiences differ, we are united by the relationships we cherish and by a shared commitment to supporting those we love as they answer God’s call.
One of the greatest gifts of SPG is the opportunity to be known by people who simply get it. Whether gathering for conversation, sharing a meal, celebrating milestones like the births of babies, the continued growth of our children, and the ever-expanding VTS family or just offering a listening ear, we discover that community is one of God’s most reliable provisions. The relationships formed within SPG remind us that caring for one another is itself a kind of ministry.
This year, SPG is led by a committee with representatives from each class. We are grateful for everyone who helps make this community a place of welcome, belonging, and encouragement and for those who show up, snacks in hand, ready to make it feel like home.
As another year of ministry begins, our hope is that every spouse and partner knows there is a place for them here. Whatever season you find yourself in, may you know that you do not walk this road alone. We look forward to growing together as companions in faith, supporting one another with grace, friendship, and just enough humor to keep things interesting.
