The Rev. Dr. Andrew McGowan and Dr. Felicity Harley-McGowan, our current Dean’s Scholars at Virginia Theological Seminary, are entering the final three weeks of their time with us. Lesley and I had the great pleasure of welcoming them to the Deanery for dinner last night. As they reflected on their stay, one highlight stood out: getting to know our students. “This is such a welcoming place,” they remarked. They have also been delighted by the Bishop Payne Library, marveling at the breadth of its collection and finding virtually every book they have needed.
Andrew recently concluded twelve years as Dean and President of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. An Anglican priest and distinguished historian of early Christianity, he remains on the Yale Divinity School faculty, where his scholarship encompasses early Christian communities, worship, and contemporary Anglicanism. Felicity is an art historian specializing in late antique and medieval art, particularly the origins and development of Christian iconography. She holds appointments at Yale in the History of Art and Divinity School, with connections to the Institute of Sacred Music.
Their presence has enriched VTS enormously. Both are exceptional scholars, generous conversationalists, and simply a complete joy to have in our community. We intend to enjoy these final weeks with them.
