Each year, when I am invited to write a reflection to share with our community, I take time to think about the moments, lessons, and experiences that shaped the past year. Some years are filled with growth, celebrations, and exciting milestones. Other years bring challenges we never imagined we would face. For me, this past year has been a combination of all of those things.
At the end of November 2025, my life changed in a way I never expected when I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. In a single moment, life felt different. The plans, routines, and responsibilities that normally filled my days were suddenly joined by doctor appointments, treatments, uncertainty, and a journey I never thought would become part of my story.
The months that followed challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally. There were difficult days, moments of fear, and times when I had to remind myself to take things one day at a time. But through this experience, I also discovered a deeper level of strength within myself. I learned that strength is not always about pushing forward without struggle. Sometimes strength is simply showing up, asking for support, allowing yourself to rest, and continuing to believe there is hope even during the hardest moments.
Through surgery, treatment, and the many changes that came with this diagnosis, I was constantly reminded of the importance of community. The kindness, encouragement, prayers, messages, flexibility, and support I received carried me through more than many people will ever know. I am incredibly grateful for the people who stood beside me, checked on me, supported my family, and continued to remind me that I was not facing this alone.
One of the greatest gifts during this season has been continuing my work at The Butterfly House. Being surrounded by children each day has been a beautiful reminder of curiosity, joy, resilience, and living fully in the present moment. Children have a special way of finding wonder in the smallest things, and this year they reminded me to do the same.
This journey has changed me. It has reminded me that tomorrow is not promised, that the small moments are often the most meaningful, and that we are stronger than we realize. It has taught me to slow down, appreciate the people around me, and find gratitude even in seasons that are difficult.
As I look back, I do not only see the challenges. I see growth. I see love. I see moments of hope and countless reasons to be thankful.
This diagnosis became part of my story, but it does not define my story. My story is also one of family, purpose, perseverance, and learning to embrace each day with gratitude.
This past year has reminded me that everyone is carrying a story that others may not see. It has shown me the importance of kindness, compassion, and the strength that can be found in community. Life can change in an instant, but even through uncertainty, there can still be moments of joy, connection, and hope.
As I continue forward, I do so with a grateful heart, a renewed perspective, and a deeper appreciation for every single day.
