An historic Board Dinner

Date: May 8, 2024

As we went through the Board members being honored last night, I was conscious of the extraordinary people who were departing the Board after such significant service. Our practice until 2012 was to permit Board members to serve for as long as they were willing. In 2012, we changed the system and Board members moved to term limits (two five year terms). This meant that in 2022 (and with COVID, it was extended to 2024), we would face significant transition.

These are Board members who elected me as Dean and President. They navigated a Chapel fire; they helped with two capital campaigns; they agonized over 3000-year old Assyrian Reliefs; they supported the Reparations Program; they recognized the need for VTS to play a role in the inevitable restructuring of theological education; and they prayed, loved, and gave to this place.

We will miss you. Please stay in touch. And do remember “once you are part of VTS, you are always part of VTS.”

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
