I am always disappointed when I have to be away from campus, especially during the academic year. However, this Thursday through Saturday, I shall be in Fredericksburg attending the Annual Convention of the Diocese of Virginia. I have the privilege of delivering a keynote address, leading a workshop, and participating in a conversation with Bishop Loya. It is an honor to be invited.
The relationship between Virginia Theological Seminary and the Diocese of Virginia is profoundly important. We are not simply an institution located within the Diocese; we are partners in forming disciples, preparing leaders, and equipping the Church for its mission. Our connections with clergy, congregations, and bishops are essential to our identity. We exist to serve the Church.
I am particularly delighted by the Convention’s theme: “Love Jesus. Embody Justice. Be Disciples — Read the Book. Tell the Story.” This is a wonderful invitation to recover the heart of Christian discipleship. Scripture must shape our imagination, the story of Jesus must become our story, and faith must find expression in justice and love. I am honored to be part of this occasion.
