At Christ Church Raleigh, NC

Date: March 18, 2026

Ms. Nicky Burridge, Senior Vice President for Communications and Institutional Advancement, and I recently had the joy of visiting Christ Church Episcopal Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. This remarkable parish is served by five clergy, all alumni of Virginia Theological Seminary: the Rev. James P. Adams, the Rev. David Frazelle, the Rev. Mary Davila, the Rev. Paddy Cavanaugh, and the Rev. Winnie Smith Cavanaugh. It was a delight to witness such a strong VTS presence in one thriving parish.

During our visit, Nicky and I were grateful for the opportunity to speak at the Adult Education hour about the importance and impact of theological education. The conversation reflected the deep commitment of this congregation to the formation of faithful and thoughtful leaders for the Church. It was encouraging to engage with a community that clearly values the work of the seminaries.

Christ Church is a dynamic parish doing wonderful work, and it is a privilege to see our alumni making such a difference in the world. Their ministry is a powerful reminder that lives are changed through the formation that takes place on the Holy Hill. Seeing that formation lived out in vibrant parish life is one of the great joys of this calling.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary.
