Be in the Library at 1pm today

Date: April 23, 2024

Yesterday I visited with the Rev. Robert M. Alves, (VTS ’89). He was just finishing a month’s sabbatical here at VTS. Here is an alum, with 35 years of ministry, who has found an interest in which he is increasingly the expert. He is interested in the journey of a Prayer Book shaped by war, in particular, the Civil War. Part history, part pastoral care – Robert explores the evolution of a text.

Today at 1pm in the Library Commons, Robert will share the result of his labors. His talk is called “The Roots of a Prayer Book for the Armed Services”; the sub-title is “Spiritual Guide Books Complied in the Crucible of Conflict”. This will be fascinating. He will share some of the texts that he has in his collection. Anyone thinking about chaplaincy, especially in the military, will find this presentation illuminating.

In addition, Robert is a good example of a priest who finished Seminary but never stopped learning and reading. He has a niche interest that he can take into his future. Do watch this space. I think, perhaps, in time he will develop his work in this area, with a book perhaps. I honor Robert as a life long learner and a good model for us all.
