Being a Research Assistant to the Dean

Date: January 30, 2024

The Dean’s office has several research projects. Last week we progressed one of those projects. It was a collection of essays on Phillips Brooks. We had different chapters on his seminary years, the Philadelphia years, the Boston years, the Harvard years, and of course, one on the poetry of Brooks. As the conference came together, I was grateful for the research assistant who has responsibility for this. Elizabeth Clarke (better known as Beth) has stepped into this role with skill and impressive logistical competence. All the details, she manages with care. In addition, with a background in writing, she assists in the editing and the organization of essays for publication.

This project is running parallel with another project on “Art and the Experience of the Divine”. This book is almost there. It will hopefully go to the publisher in the next few weeks. Once again Beth was pivotal in keeping the project on track.

The mantra that you should never judge a book by its cover is so true. This is not simply true of content, but also true of production. The name on the cover gets the credit; but the real work is often done by a talented person behind the scenes. Thank you Beth.
