It is that time of the year again. Vice President Ballou and I will be meeting with each department to finalize the budget. These are important meetings. We work through each department’s position in terms of expenditures and revenues. We discuss their staffing needs. We talk about options going forward.
We are in a season of some uncertainty. The market has fallen dramatically in recent weeks, due to the tragic war in Ukraine. Inflation is high. Everything, from meals to maintenance, is more expensive.
The budget season always leaves someone disappointed. Sometimes we have to say, “Sorry, this is something that we cannot afford.” It is a moment when we always wish we had a little more – then this or that exciting idea could be implemented. In a community of constant potential, the budget season is often a hard season.
