Virginia Theological Seminary invites you to a special commemoration of the Right Reverend John Thomas Walker on Tuesday, September 30. Hosted by the African American Episcopal Historical Collection, this day of worship, conversation, and reflection celebrates Bishop Walker’s extraordinary legacy of faith, leadership, and service.
The program opens at 8:15 am with a moving Commemorative Eucharist in Immanuel Chapel, featuring hymns from Lift Every Voice and Sing II, special prayers, and a new hagiography written for the occasion. At 11:00 am, join Canon Preston Hannibal and Dr. Lloyd Lewis for a panel on Faith, Equity, and Education, followed at 3:00 pm by a keynote address from Bishop Nathan Baxter, reflecting on Walker’s lasting impact on the church and world.
Throughout the day, Bishop Payne Library will feature a screening of Prophesy Fulfilled in Me and a curated exhibit on Bishop Walker’s ministry. This is an important opportunity to remember, give thanks, and be inspired—please come and take part in this powerful day of tribute.
