It is an extraordinary privilege to watch the Rev. Dr. Katherine Sonderegger lecture. I marvel at the sheer knowledge of the literature; I enjoy the elegance of the delivery; I love the moments that make one smile; and I appreciate the depth and analysis. So this year’s Costan Lecturer is our very own professor of Systematic Theology.
The theme is “Christ as Holy Sacrifice.” The first lecture tonight is called “A Cyrillian Christology Today;” tomorrow’s lecture is called “The Ministry of Christ as Sacrifice;” and the third lecture is called “The Death of Christ as Hallowing Sacrifice.” The titles of these lectures promise a journey into the doctrine of the Atonement and the promise that an idea that so many scholars find problematic – namely, sacrifice – will be rehabilitated with Kate’s exceptional skill and erudition.
It is lovely having Kate on the Faculty. Theology, for her, is an exercise in prayer. Talk of God is made possible when a human life is in conversation with God. I am looking forward to this occasion. I invite you all to join us for the Facebook Livestream at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
