Yesterday the team in the dean’s office went for a festive lunch. It was an opportunity to relax, learn about each other’s Christmas plans, and get a sense of the person beyond the office. There were six of us at dinner. It was fun.
I do encourage all departments to create some moment to mark the upcoming Christmas break. It might be cookies and a coffee. It might be a matter of bringing in pizza for lunch. It might be, as it was for us, a trip to a restaurant. Too often relationships focus on the tasks of work. These moments are when you engage with the whole person in all their richness.
And for students and families, I do invite the dorms to think about a gathering. The apartment blocks should do the same. This is a special time of the year; and it would be great if we all find a way to mark it.
