Dr. Sonderegger Defending the Unfashionable

Date: April 28, 2021

It was a tour de force. One marvels at the thoughtful engagement of the literature and the brilliance of the trajectory sketched out. The first Costan lecture took place last night. The theme was sacrifice. Two-thirds of the lecture outlined why sacrifice has gone out of fashion. Dr. Sonderegger conceded the depth of the counter critique, the legitimate concerns embedded, and how most theologians want to avoid the language. But (in a very characteristic move in Sonderegger’s theology) insisted we need this language. It is the only language adequate to explain the significance of the Eternal Word making the journey to the cross.

One can see why Kate Sonderegger is generating so much interest. It is not so much for the new positions that she sketches out but the way she defends some of the most traditional positions. It was fascinating to watch the arguments get developed for the first time in front of the audience in the Lettie Evans Multipurpose Room.

Tonight is the second installment. I must admit I am deeply curious. How exactly will she respond to all the criticisms that she has outlined? If you missed the first, then please do not miss the second. Join us for the Livestream on our Facebook page at 5:00 p.m. EDT
