Exciting Week Ahead at CACS: Fall Programming Launch & Scriptural Reasoning Events

Date: September 10, 2024

Two exciting things are happening at the Center for Anglican Communion Studies (CACS) this week.

First, the team from CACS will be launching their fall programming in Scott Lounge, today September 10 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Do stop by with your lunch to hear about scriptural reasoning with the Rumi Forum, Anglican Communion meetings, and January cross-cultural education programs (CCEPs).

Second, I encourage all to attend the first Rumi Forum scriptural reasoning session of the semester on Thursday, September 12 in the Lettie Pate Evans Room, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The forum is always free but do register on Eventbrite ahead of time.

The three Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—share a common belief that the God who chose to be revealed to Moses in a flaming bush has also been revealed in sacred texts. How we read these texts, how we interpret them, and how we use them to further our understanding of each other is the core work of scriptural reasoning.

For those interested in learning how to facilitate scriptural reasoning, the Rose Castle Foundation will be holding a training event, also on September 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Addison 107. This training will include the scriptural reasoning session in LPER.  Please register for that by Wednesday, September 11.

This work of interfaith dialogue is always important but becomes all the more pertinent during a time of intense conflict involving Jews, Muslims, and Christians. And it’s why the theme of this Thursday’s event “Empathy” is particularly timely.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and President of The General Theological Seminary
