There is so much that I like about this book. I love the cover – trees stretching up into the night sky; I love the guidance at the end of each chapter “Make Sure Not to Miss” (a list of Bible passages that one must read); and, most of all, I love the pace and feel of the book. It is a real skill to write a book that pulsates with learning, yet is accessible. It is not footnote heavy, but every sentence is underpinned by reading. The dedicated teacher has through this book made the world her classroom. Now everyone can discover the Bible.
The book is called Holy Imagination: A Literary and Theological Introduction to the Whole Bible (Nashville: Abingdon Press 2021). The author invites the reader into a dialogue and models such dialogue in the way she writes. Analogies are offered with the Superman franchise; the spirituals are discussed; and Latinx and womanist interpretations are offered. The result is a rich and vibrant journey into the Bible.
Judy is a person of deep faith. Reading Scripture, she explains, is a little like the engagement with poetry. It is not always easy or obvious, but the careful reading can be life transforming. She wants the reader to fall in love with Scripture; and she wants us all to be changed by the God who inspired Scripture. It is an extraordinary book. Please do buy a copy and congratulate Judy on this substantial offering to the academy, Church, and the world.
