Find the Portrait

Date: January 8, 2025

The Chapel was always built to have a portrait in the building. Originally, it was Charlie Price, the remarkable professor of theology. But when the Refectory was renovated, the portrait was moved into the Refectory.

A group of alums approached me and asked to have a portrait of the Rev. Dr. Barney Hawkins. They viewed with deep affection his teaching and his witness as a professor passionate about the parish. In addition, I was very aware that he was the Vice President for Institutional Advancement that took on the responsibility of raising the funds for the new Chapel. Back in 2010, we embarked on that campaign with considerable nervousness. The Seminary did not have a strong track record in fundraising. The success of that campaign was due in large measure to the leadership, energy, and commitment of Fr. Hawkins.

The portrait is by the renowned artist Richard Fennell. It is a pensive and passionate Barney. Unencumbered with vestments, he is deeply in thought about the church that he has given his entire life in service. It is deliberately placed so it is not visible from the heart of the Chapel. Instead, you will need to make an exploration down the corridor behind the organ. Do go and look.
