Please allow me a confession. I find recording sermons difficult. My head is always in the wrong position for the camera. The light isn’t quite right. I like to speak without notes direct to the camera, but the flow is less than smooth. In addition, I find myself overwhelmingly tempted to start over. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church asked me to preach for the Fourth Sunday of Advent; it took six attempts. And to be honest, the last one was not that great. I am collecting a significant number of “outtakes.” So in an act of solidarity with all preachers who are frantically recording sermons for Sunday, I am sharing my sermon “blooper.” You can watch by clicking the play button on the video below. Bringing the Word using technology is, I think, harder than standing in a pulpit. We trust, however, that God uses our labors and efforts. This is holy work even if it is being recorded from your office. As we come to the end of our coronavirus Advent 2020, I want to just say thank you to all preachers who have brought the Word to the people of God in the hardest of times using a camera. The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D. Dean and President
