Date: October 2, 2020

Yesterday I participated in a gathering of Clergy in the Order of Saint John (USA). This Order is best known for its support of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. The Priory Sub-Prelate, the Rev. Dr. Russ J. Levenson, Jr., Rector of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, had asked me to be a guest speaker and talk a little about formation at Seminary for Covid times.  It was a lovely occasion. I recognized many of the participants. These included a VTS Board member, several recent alums, as well as some good friends of the Seminary. I learned as I participated. Russ gently exhorted the clergy to use their various platforms to promote the work of the Order which extends to the following: “to prevent and relieve sickness and injury, and to act to enhance the health and well-being of people anywhere in the world.” These networks are important. In a season when clergy isolation is a real problem, they don’t just provide mutual support, but as Russ explained, they are vehicles to promote Gospel values. I was impressed by this dedicated group of clergy. May God bless the work of the Order. The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D. Dean and President
