Date: September 4, 2020

We had a hundred or so students, faculty, and staff tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday. We invite all those who still need to get tested (and remember it is mandatory for those in residence on the campus, including family members) to make sure that they make themselves available next Tuesday. Otherwise, you must get tested separately and at your own expense. Apart from going to the Refectory to collect meals, we ask those waiting for results to keep their distance and stay in their residences save for grocery shopping and exercise. And even when you have your results, please continue to physically distance and wear masks. For employees there is no obligation to get tested (after all, we understand that you are living in homes where people are coming and going all the time). However, we do encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. The asymptomatic carrier of the virus is an important part of the spread of this disease. You can protect those you love by getting tested, to be sure that you are not making others sick without realizing it. In an ideal universe, we would be testing everyone weekly. However, this is not possible. Instead we are doing this reentry testing as a tool to ensure that as people gather from different parts of the country, we seek to create a low risk environment. This, combined with physical distancing, wearing masks, encouraging those who can work remotely to do so (while keeping a departmental presence), and creating a culture where those who feel unwell stay away will, we trust, enable us to continue our work safely and carefully through this semester.
