From TryTank: A Simple, Spirit-Led Way for Latino Ministry

Date: May 27, 2025

El Jardín offers a new—yet deeply ancient—way for The Episcopal Church to engage in Latino ministry. Rooted in the early church’s rhythms of prayer, Scripture, shared meals, and deep community (Acts 2:42–47), El Jardín is a Spirit-led model of microchurches: small, lay-led gatherings that meet in homes or informal spaces to grow faith in relational, accessible, and sustainable ways.

Originally developed in the Church of England, El Jardín is built on a simple premise: church begins wherever people say yes to God and yes to their neighbors. It’s not about programs or buildings, but about creating spaces of prayer, conversation, and shared life. A typical gathering includes a meal, Scripture, prayer, and open reflection—nurturing both spiritual growth and community bonds.

In Puerto Rico, TryTank has trained 22 congregations in this model. Six of them will be receiving a full year of coaching as they begin planting Jardines in their neighborhoods. The early results are hopeful: leaders are encouraged, participation is growing, and a spirit of renewal is taking root.

Next, the Diocese of Texas will launch its own cohort, starting with a June training and followed by monthly coaching. The goal is the same: many small, Spirit-filled communities flourishing in everyday spaces.

Theologically, El Jardín invites us back to the essentials: Jesus at the table, Scripture in our hands, and the Holy Spirit leading the way. Where two or three are gathered, Christ is present—and faith begins to bloom.
