From today through Thursday, I am in Houston attending the House of Bishops meeting. The bishops of The Episcopal Church are dedicating substantial time to the topic of theological education, and all the deans of the Episcopal seminaries have been invited to participate. I am delighted to be present for this important conversation.
The bishops have a deep and rightful interest in the quality of theological education, since the formation of clergy is central to the life and future of the Church. Their willingness to devote significant time to this topic reflects a serious commitment to the intellectual and spiritual preparation of those who will serve God’s people. It is a great honor that this conversation is taking place in such a focused way.
I am particularly grateful to the Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Sean W. Rowe, and to Canon Chuck Robertson for their thoughtful organization of this gathering. Their leadership has created the space for a rich and constructive dialogue between bishops and seminary leaders. It is a privilege to be part of such an important moment for the Church.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary.Â
