Just Pause and Say, “Thank You!”

Date: October 18, 2021

It is about now in the middle of the semester that the sheer number of things I am supposed to do is a little overwhelming. I suspect this is true of everyone. The glow of regathering after a summer apart is over. Now we are in the midst of lectures and assignments. For staff, the events that need planning are demanding attention. The Annual Fund, Admissions, and SchoolDude tickets are picking up. For faculty, travel needs to be added to the schedule, as we are asked to preach and lecture around the country. The pace has picked up. Life is suddenly really busy.

Today, I invite everyone just to take a pause. Clear ten minutes, grab a coffee from The Flamingo, talk to a friend or colleague. And take a moment to thank the person you are talking to for everything they are handling. And as we thank each other, let us also thank God. Thank God that we have this opportunity to get things done.

There is a cycle to the semester. Assignments just have to come together towards the end of the semester because you have to learn about the stuff that you are then writing on. Therefore, it just does go from quieter to busier. However, it is possible to be too busy. It is possible to be overwhelmed. So, watch for the warning signs – if you are finding it difficult to sleep or needing to drink too much, then seek some help. Talk to your supervisor, talk to your spiritual director, talk to a friend. Let us all stay well as we navigate this busy season.
