I am writing this commentary at 4.38pm on Tuesday afternoon. Perhaps by the time you read this commentary on Wednesday morning, the result is known. However, perhaps, my obligation for this day after the election is to share a simple thought.
God is the business of eternity. The truth of eternity is revealed in the Eternal Word made flesh. Our obligation as Christians is always to keep the divine perspective in view. The eternal perspective values human dignity, the centrality of love, and the need for community. As we interpret the election, our obligation as Church is to focus on what really matters. Our primary responsibility is to bring Christ to a hurting world and to reflect the values of Christ to this world.
While elections matter, let us remind ourselves afresh that ultimately everything is ephemeral. God’s kingdom will last forever.
