The discovery of an early draft of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail in the archives of Virginia Theological Seminary is an extraordinary moment of grace and history intertwined. This document, one of the defining theological and moral texts of the twentieth century, invites us once more to reflect on the prophetic power of faith in the public square and the enduring call to justice that animates our mission at VTS.
Our gratitude extends to Archivist Denton Waite, AAEHC Curator Riley Temple, Assistant Archivist Kayla Floyd, and intern Nick Gentry, whose meticulous research and collaboration led to the authentication of this early typeset draft prepared by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Their dedication exemplifies the intellectual rigor, integrity, and reverence that define the Archives and the Bishop Payne Library.
This discovery reminds us that the work of theological education is not only about preserving the past but ensuring that voices of truth continue to shape the present. Through the faithful labor of our archival team, Dr. King’s words resonate anew within our community—calling us to courage, compassion, and the transformative work of reconciliation.
