Looking ahead to Lent – Mark your calendars now

Date: December 1, 2023

It is a delight to have the Rev. Dr. Sarah Coakley in Alexandria. She can often be seen on the campus as she enjoys the library or visits a faculty colleague. So, I am excited to share the news that she is offering a very distinctive opportunity for the seminary community during Lent.

For five Wednesdays in Lent – namely Feb 21, Feb 28, March 6, March 13, and March 20, Dr. Coakley will host an opportunity for silent prayer. Instead of Evening Prayer, those participating will gather in the Oratory at 5.15pm to 6pm. Dr. Coakley will introduce the experience with a short reflection and then those gathered will enter into the conversation with the Divine through the gift of focused silence. On the last Wednesday, there will be a contemplative Eucharist.

This is a shared event with Immanuel Church on the Hill. And if you are able, then you might want to reflect more deeply on the nature of prayer with Dr. Coakley. If so, then please do consider going to two preparatory Forums on prayer at Immanuel Church on the Hill at 10am on the first two Sundays of Lent (Feb 18 and Feb 25).

I am just so pleased that this opportunity is being made available. Do mark your calendars now: this will be a rare treat.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
