Date: November 29, 2022
This week, the Mission Society host Professor Stephen Bevans SVD. Dr. Bevans will be in conversation with students and faculty today at a 1pm forum entitled, “Mission not Proselytization” (Addison 101). He will also visit a number of classes across a number of subject areas. On Wednesday morning, Dr. Bevans will be the preacher at the annual Mission Society Eucharist.
Stephen B. Bevans is preeminent in the field of missiology. A Roman Catholic priest and theologian, he is the Louis J. Luzbetak, SVD Professor of Mission and Culture, Emeritus at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago. He holds the STL from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the MA and PhD from the University of Notre Dame.
With Roger Schroeder, Bevans has authored the standard text in the field of missiology. Constants in Contexts (2004) has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, and Vietnamese and the book shows no sign of being superseded any time soon. Peter C. Phan describes Bevans’s work as animated by missiological, contextual, and dialogical imagination. Yet, for all his achievements and all the accolades he has received, Stephen Bevans remains a humble and open-hearted follower of Jesus Christ. It is an honor to host him.
Please do welcome Professor Bevans and, if you are able, come along to the forum today.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President
