Date: October 19, 2020
The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music, along with Lifelong Learning at VTS, will host a Gathering on Liturgical Formation, a formation opportunity on the liturgy of the Episcopal Church. This event will be held online via Zoom teleconferencing today and tomorrow.
The purpose of this symposium is to:
-Articulate current initiatives of the SCLM and Taskforce for Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision (TFLPBR); -Respond to current liturgical anxieties of the wider Church; -Produce fruitful conversations across a wide range of backgrounds; and -Provide resources for cultural competence in planning liturgy.
The Gathering on Liturgical Formation will help clarify the options and best practices for the Church as we continue the work of understanding and reimagining the liturgy. To that same end, the SCLM hopes that the Gathering will help form its participants, learning more about the wider Church’s curiosities and anxieties surrounding liturgy.
Each plenary session will include two speakers in a conversation facilitated by the current chair of the SCLM, the Rev. Dr. Paul Fromberg. Our roster of speakers includes the Rt. Rev. Mary Gray Reeves, the Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson, the Rev. Dr. James Turrell, the Rt. Rev. Neil Alexander, Dr. Liza Anderson, the Rev. Dr. Juan Oliver, the Rev. Jemonde Taylor, and the Rev. Cameron Partridge. The topics of these webinars include: What is the Purpose of Liturgy?; The Church Calendar; The Book of Common Prayer; and TFLPBR Gossip.
In addition to plenary webinars, participants will have an opportunity to question our presenters and to take part in small group discussions. The event is offered free of charge.
