Ms. Ellen Hawkins

Date: December 15, 2023

This weekend is a special weekend. On Sunday, we will have the traditional Lessons and Carols and the conferral of the Dean’s Cross on Ms. Ellen Hawkins. We are anticipating many guests on the campus. The music will be sublime; the story of salvation history from Scripture will be moving; and the conferral of the Dean’s Cross on Ellen will be memorable. Do please attend.

Ellen has been a much-loved member of the VTS community since her arrival on the campus in 2000. She came with her father, the Rev. Dr. Barney Hawkins, and her mother, the Rev. Dr. Linda Wofford Hawkins, and her brother Mr. Crawford Hawkins. As a family they made a significant difference. Linda’s gardening skills created a venue for countless conversations between the Rev. Dr. Tony Lewis and the Hawkins’ family on Mission Lane. Crawford joined generations of young people who learned the art of a working day by working for Mr. Dave Muscheller in maintenance. And Ellen not only worked in the Butterfly House but was also a presence of beauty as she made everyone she met feel special.

Barney is finishing on December 31 after serving as the director of the DMin, the director of CACS, the Arthur Carl Lichtenberger Professor in Pastoral Theology and Continuing Education, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and the Co-Director of the Capital Campaign and Director of Construction. His work in all these areas was remarkable. The DMin grew; CACS was present at Lambeth 2008 and developed a significant global profile; as a professor he was an extraordinary teacher and an author; as VP he oversaw the Chapel for the Ages Campaign; and as co-director of the Bicentennial Campaign, he raised $62 million.

On a personal level, he is my friend and mentor. For his wisdom and sense of humor, I am deeply grateful. Thank you Hawkins’ family for the many gifts you all gave this place.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
