Seminary’s New Mission Statement

Date: May 18, 2021

The work of revising the Seminary’s mission statement takes a village. From staff, faculty, and the Board of Trustees, people from all parts of the Seminary community have contributed to crafting the new statement. We are proud to introduce our new mission statement:

Led by the Holy Spirit, Virginia Theological Seminary forms and educates leaders who proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and helps others participate in God’s mission throughout the world. We are a racially and culturally diverse residential community of The Episcopal Church, devoted to worship & prayer; teaching & learning; and research & service to the wider church.

Certain themes are central. The statement is deeply theological – we are led by the Holy Spirit and committed to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The goals of formation and education are clearly there. Our commitment to racial and cultural diversity is important. And the theme of community committed to worship, prayer, teaching, learning, and research and service is explicit.

The previous statement was a light edit of a statement originally crafted in the 1990s. The light edit was written in 2017 and does not reflect where the Seminary is today or strives to be in the future. Please join me in thanking all those people who dedicated their time and energy to crafting this new statement.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
