Reflections on Leadership, Vision, and Service

Date: June 12, 2025

My first encounter with our esteemed Dean and President was our work together as Trustees for St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School.  We each have one son and our boys were one year apart so there was an immediate bond of understanding of the love and pride we share of these two remarkable young men.  I realized immediately that Ian Markham is a unique leader and  a visionary … a term that is overused, yet one that he embodies in his actions and his writings.

His tenure at Virginia Theological Seminary has been marked by extraordinary events, both exhilarating and catastrophic:  a fire, the new chapel, reparations, renovations of the Alexandria campus and the affiliation with General Theological Seminary.  Through it all, he displays humor, compassion and love to those he serves and those who serve with him.  He has assembled a stellar team of senior staff and a faculty beyond compare.

Through my work with our committed and thoughtful Board of Trustees, I have grown in my own faith and understanding of our Anglican Communion and the importance of strong and robust Theological Education.  My tenure on the Board has been among the most rewarding service of any institution which I have had the privilege to serve.  Ian Markham is a large part of making our work as trustees impactful.  He has helped me  “go out to do the work God has given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord”.  I am humbled to serve Virginia Theological Seminary and eternally grateful to count Ian and Lesley Markham among my dearest friends.
