For the second year in a row, TryTank is partnering with a remarkable group of ecumenical collaborators to launch a bold research initiative—this time focused on the vitality of lay-led congregations. As more churches across denominations shift to lay leadership due to a continued decline in ordained clergy, we’re asking a crucial question: can these congregations not only survive, but truly thrive?
This research will unfold in two phases. First, we’ll conduct a wide-ranging survey of over 400 lay-led congregations, gathering insights into their worship life, discipleship practices, leadership structures, community engagement, and sustainability. Then we’ll go deeper, selecting a group of congregations for in-depth case studies and interviews. These stories will help surface the real-life challenges, creative solutions, and spiritual dynamics shaping ministry without a full-time priest or pastor.
What sets this effort apart is the shared commitment behind it. Like last year’s work on young adult parents, this research brings together an ecumenical coalition—leaders and institutions who believe, as we do, that innovation in the Church must be rooted in real data and deep listening.
This isn’t about preserving old models. It’s about understanding what’s emerging, where the Spirit is leading, and how we can equip lay leaders to flourish in their unique contexts. TryTank is honored to lead this work again, helping the wider Church imagine faithful and sustainable futures.
