Two distinguished lives who are close to the Seminary have recently passed into eternity. And today, I wish to just acknowledge their gifts among us.
We start with General Colin Powell: a committed Episcopalian who was honored by the Seminary with an honorary doctorate in October 1999. He died at the age of 84, after complications arising from COVID-19. In his distinguished career, he was the first African American appointed as Secretary of State. Clergy and alumni close to him described him as a man of deep faith and honor. We honor his memory today.

The Rev. Dr. Mark McIntosh died at the age of 61 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS); Mark was a recipient of the Dean’s Cross in 2019 and visited the Seminary many times, including being the keynote speaker at Convocation. He was a distinguished and thoughtful theologian, weaving together spirituality and theology in deeply attractive ways.
Let us remember General Powell and Dr. McIntosh in our prayers.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President
