Rikkyo University 150 years old

Date: May 13, 2024

There are some moments when one is honored to be the dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary. The extraordinary event of Saturday May 11 in Tokyo, Japan was one of those moments.

I was the living reminder of the founder of Rikkyo University. Channing Moore Williams, our alumus, made the journey in the middle of the nineteenth century from Virginia Theological Seminary to China and later Japan. His legacy is amazing: several churches built and congregations founded, a Seminary, several high schools, a hospital, and finally a prestigious university. On Saturday, I joined the various dignitaries (including the Governor of Tokyo) to honor the 150 years of Rikkyo University.

The occasion was rich, interesting, and moving. Perhaps the most interesting moment for me was the trailer for the movie dedicated to the life of Channing Moore Williams. Our alumnus lives on. His achievement continues to reverberate down the ages.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
