Rt. Rev. Dr. George Okoth

Date: October 31, 2023

Today we have the opportunity to hear from CACS Communion Sabbatical Visitor, the Rt. Rev. Dr. George Okoth of the Diocese of Mara in the Anglican Church of Tanzania. He will share with us a talk on “Current Topics in the Diocese of Mara” in the Lettie Pate Evans Room from 12:45pm – 1:45pm. Bagged lunches are available for those who registered a week in advance, but all are welcome to join, and to bring their lunch. Bishop Okoth has invited all of us to hear his talk today to learn more about the ministry of the Diocese of Mara, and he invites the campus to pray for the initiatives the Church is supporting there.

The Anglican Diocese of Mara is part of a rapidly growing Christian community in Tanzania. Growing from 12 parishes in 1985 to 143 parishes and three dioceses by 2010, the Diocese of Mara has a strong emphasis on evangelism and supporting women in Tanzania. Among the initiatives the Diocese operates that Bishop Okoth will discuss today are the Mugumu Safe House for girls escaping female genital mutilation and the Girls Brigade of Sewing and Handcraft Centre for women and girls with few educational opportunities.

Please do join us in LPER at 12:45pm today, and please continue to welcome VTS alumni Bishop Okoth back to campus. During his Sabbatical time here, he is completing work on a book on prayer and will be preaching in chapel at 8:15am on Monday, November 6th. We are grateful for his time with us.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
