Sacristan Reflections: Preparing for the New Academic Year

Date: August 2, 2023

As the new academic year approaches and the new students are moving onto campus, there is a feeling of excitement and anticipation of renewal, hope, and the opportunity for spiritual growth. I vividly recall August term of my first year at VTS.  I remember observing the sacristans’ warm and welcoming presence during the August term chapels. As the new seminarians are coming onto campus, I am grateful to do the same for them and for the chance to contribute to the spiritual life of our community and help create a space where everyone finds solace, nurtures their faith, and grows in communion with God and one another.

The work of the sacristan team, though often behind the scenes, sets the tone for communal worship, creating a sacred environment where the VTS community can genuinely encounter God. Our responsibilities extend beyond preparing the elements of the Eucharist and the worship space. We also maintain the community prayer list, interceding for those in need. (Please email us your requests at prayer-request@vts.edu).

The sacristan team wholeheartedly embraces the opportunity to serve our community as we contribute to our chapel’s physical and spiritual preparation. This sacred space serves as the fertile ground where seeds of knowledge, faith, and community are sown, fostering a profound sense of connection and growth among all who enter its doors.

As we embark on this new academic year, my sincere hope is that we may all draw closer to God and strengthen our bonds with God and each other as we journey together in faith and love.
