Seminarians of Color Union (SOCU)

Date: August 18, 2021

Soon after the 2020-21 year began, VTS reaffirmed the Seminary Covenant as part of the Introduction to Intercultural Competency. The first line reads:

We, the community of Virginia Theological Seminary, in response to the love of God in Christ, resolve to embody love, justice, peace, and respect for every child of God on this campus and in the world. We affirm that disciples of Jesus are called to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves.”

While making this important statement, the Seminary presented what was to be the most culturally diverse class of incoming students in its history.  Moreover, VTS had solidified its commitment to the Reparations Program as a move to recognize racism in the institution’s past and work towards a reconciled future of healing. Later in the academic year, the community would learn that VTS had already located, contacted, and made settlements with several families. Finally, the Dean’s Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity initiated a dialog regarding the renaming of buildings named after individuals who played active roles in the oppression of people of color. This work that has been started is far from finished. We need you.

The Seminarians of Color Union (SOCU), in partnership with The Office of Multicultural Ministries, remains committed to nurturing and strengthening a diverse community of faith. We remain committed to creating a safe space for seminarians of color to have their voices heard and to contribute to the broader conversations that affect our community. We remain committed to building relationships and growing together so that we can faithfully lead an ever-changing Church. Throughout the year, SOCU will be holding a variety of events that reflect our commitments to VTS and the Church. So, on behalf of SOCU, welcome to a new year at VTS.
