When I took this position in 2007, Canon Leslie Houlden, my New Testament professor at King’s College London, thought that the idea of daily commentary absurd. “What on earth will you say,” he remarked. “By day three, you will simply be reporting on menu in the Refectory,” he continued.
Strangely, the opposite is true. Often I cannot decide between various options. Today for example, I could write about the sermon preached by Cara Modisett last night in Chapel, or that our seniors have now received their GOE results. Last night, the Rev. Dr. Richard Burridge held his book launch here on campus. All deserve attention.
Therefore we pause. We are grateful. It is a privilege of this place that the commentary isn’t simply the menu in the Refectory.
