SOCU and the Labor Day Picnic

Date: August 30, 2024

Tonight the Deanery hosts its first dinner. We will welcome the “Students of Color Union”. Readers of the commentary over the summer will have learned all about SOCU. SOCU is an important witness in our community. Back in the 1990s, students of color were a very small minority. As we seek to serve a changing Church and a changing world, we continue to trust that God will raise up vocations from diverse communities who can come to VTS and help shape us in our work.

On Monday, offices are closed (so there is no commentary on that day). Instead, the Student Government is organizing their first seminary wide event. We will gather for the Labor Day Picnic. It is always a special time. This is the moment when I meet children and spouses. Let us hope that the weather is good. And I look forward to seeing you there.

Have a blessed Labor Day weekend.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
