Thank you Gabriel Oakes

Date: March 27, 2024

Yesterday I met with Gabriel (a junior). Gabriel had seen the story about the Diocese of New York opposing the Board of General Theological Seminary over a possible lease of the campus. We talked through the details of exactly what is going on. And thanks to Gabriel’s advocacy, I will hold a forum for the community at lunchtime today.

I want to commend Gabriel’s decision to come and see me. We live in a reactive world: we live in a world where impressions become facts, where there is no appreciation of two sides to the story, and where we “blast” the opposition right from the outset. To make an appointment, to sit with me, to hear and seek to understand – these are qualities that are rare both in the world and, sadly, in the Church.

I was grateful Gabriel. Thank you. And I look forward to explaining further in the forum today.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
