The Anglican Communion Science Commission is Coming to VTS

Date: July 25, 2024

From October 28 – November 1, VTS will host the provincial lead bishops of the Anglican Communion Science Commission for a three-day consultation on how science can contribute to and be informed by Christian theology and mission. CACS is honored to work with Dean Markham to support the meeting, coordinating especially with the Rev. Canon Dr. Stephen Spencer, Adviser for Theological Education, and others at the Anglican Communion Office. Dean Markham will address the group during their time here, Dr. Grieb will provide daily Bible studies, and there will be time for a forum where the VTS community can hear from some of the members of this group. The Commission meeting follows the recent Lambeth Call webinar on Science and Faith, which discussed the Science Commission’s work, recent developments in artificial intelligence, responses to the climate crisis, and how science and faith can interact. The webinar and related resources can be viewed here.

For those who might not know, the Science Commission was formally launched at the Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops in 2022. Its purpose is to “celebrate science as a God-given resource and to support faith and science communities work together for the betterment of people and planet.” As a group, the commission meets to discuss various topics on faith and science in order to aid larger Anglican discussions and equip churches to collaborate with the scientific community.
