The appointment of Pastor Elwood Jones

Pastor Elwood Jones represents a profound milestone in the history of the Virginia Theological Seminary. As the first descendant within the institution’s reparations program to earn a degree, his graduation this past summer with a Master of Arts marks a significant moment for both the individual and the Seminary. We hope he is the first of many descendants in our programs.

Today I am pleased to announce that Pastor Jones has now been appointed as the Dean’s Advisor for Community Engagement. Based in the Bohlen building, his new role is designed to bridge the gap between the seminary’s academic mission and the broader needs of the public. His appointment signals a new chapter for the institution, one where the principles of equity and engagement are deeply integrated into the daily operations and strategic vision of the seminary.

The excitement surrounding this appointment is palpable, particularly as we look toward our collaborative event with Alexandria City students next week. Pastor Jones has already begun developing innovative programming that promises to deepen our local partnerships and foster meaningful dialogue. As the office of Community Engagement officially gets “off and running”, we are eager to see the impact of his leadership. By prioritizing community-centered initiatives, Pastor Jones is ensuring that the seminary remains a vital, responsive, and inclusive partner in our shared future.
