The Fighting Friars Triumph Again!

Date: October 27, 2026

As I approach the end of my tenure at Virginia Theological Seminary, I have been reflecting on the achievements of these many years. Yet one particular ambition eluded me for the longest time: overseeing a victory by our Fighting Friars at the Luther Bowl. This annual flag football tournament brings together teams from theological institutions for a day of spirited competition and fellowship. For years, our team came tantalizingly close, finishing second on numerous occasions. Then, last year, history was made. For the first time ever, the Fighting Friars brought home the trophy!

This past Saturday, we returned as defending champions. The question was simple: could we do it again? Could our team demonstrate that last year’s triumph was not simply a glorious exception but the beginning of a winning tradition? Under the outstanding leadership of our Dean’s Advisor and flag football coach, the Rev. Dr. Bob Flanagan, the Fighting Friars rose magnificently to the challenge. I am absolutely delighted to report that the Luther Bowl trophy is coming home to Alexandria once again!

This is an extraordinary achievement. Winning once is remarkable; defending the title successfully is something even more special. It speaks to the dedication, teamwork, determination, and wonderful spirit of our students. My warmest congratulations go to every member of the team, and especially to Bob Flanagan for his exceptional leadership. You have given the entire Seminary community another reason to celebrate. Well done, Fighting Friars! We are enormously proud of you. Two years running—what a triumph!

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary.
