The gift of the Rev. Canon Dr. Mark Oakley

Date: September 13, 2023

When one think of VTS, one thinks of “class, chapel, lunch”. One thinks of great professors and a good graduate school experience; one thinks of worship in the chapel; and one thinks of table fellowship in the Refectory. But after last night’s Deanery evening, I hope you also think of the many additional opportunities that can really enhance your time here at VTS. Now, no one should try to get to all of these events. There are musical events, CACS events, Lifelong Learning events, as well as Deanery events. However, do take a moment to get to some of these events; for these events are the moment when you hear new and different voices, gain a sense of a perspective that others do not provide, and have your worldview changed through the encounter.

Last night, we had the Rev. Canon Dr. Mark Oakley address the group in the Deanery. It was moving, funny, interesting, and deeply thoughtful. As a result, everyone saw the world just a little differently. This is the gift of these moments. I am grateful to Mark for his willingness to share; I am grateful to all those who shared the moment with me.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary.
